Why don't people give Americans full credit for their extensive geographic knowledge?

extremely sad because this is reality for many Americans, and I think the school system has let us down, there should be more strict rules and regulations on children! What is even more sad is when people confuse a word when writing, a word that has two distinct meanings. And seeing that constantly starts messing with your mind and then you start writing like that ughh!!!
